October 2026

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Cancer in general is a disease in which certain cells in the body grow out of control. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in the United States. Although breast cancer occurs mainly in woman, men have breast tissue and can also develop breast cancer.

Our family history, our lifestyle, and the environment around us can increase our risk of developing cancer. Although there are no guarantees, you can take steps to help prevent breast cancer by maintaining a healthy weight, exercise regularly, do monthly self-breast exams, and regular mammograms. Most experts recommend that women at average risk for breast cancer should start screening at age 40, either yearly or every two years. Ask your doctor what makes sense for you.

Cancer is a disease that can be cured if caught in its early stages. That is why it is important to get yearly screenings – prostate screening for men starting at age 50, and mammograms for woman starting at age 40. A significant number of women report that the first sign of their breast cancer was a new breast lump they discovered on their own. We have the power to reduce our cancer risks by living healthier. Talk to your health care professional about how you might lower your risk of cancer.

Praying for Mind, Body, and Spiritual Wellness to you,
