July Health Focus: Heart Safety during the Summer Heat.
July brings sunshine, vacations, and outdoor fun — but it also brings higher temperatures that place extra stress on the heart, especially for older adults and anyone with high blood pressure.
Our heart works harder in hot weather. Heat causes the heart to pump faster as it tries to cool the body. For people with hypertension, diabetes, or heart disease, this can increase heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke. So can protect our heart by staying well hydrated especially when we must go out in the heat.
Hydrate early and often — Aim for at least 6–8 cups of water daily; more if outdoors.
If possible, plan outdoor activities before 10 AM or after 6 PM.
Dress for the weather — Light, breathable clothing helps regulate body temperature. Also remember to apply sunscreen if you are exposed to direct sun. There is a saying “Black does not crack,” and it is true that the melanin in our skin protects the epidermis of our skin. This is why we do not develop the fine lines and wrinkles as lighter skinned people. But, our skin can be damaged and develop skin cancer if exposed to sun over time.
Watch your salt intake — Too much sodium plus heat can spike blood pressure.
Know the warning signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke — Headache, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, nausea, or confusion. Provide immediate cooling and hydration. If the person becomes disoriented or passes out – call 911.
Our health is a gift from God. Steward it well this summer by listening to your body, staying hydrated, and choosing rest when needed. A cool body supports a strong heart.
Praying for Mind Body and Spiritual Wellness to you,
